Katadyn BeFree Water Filtration System 1.0L Review
Jared Kukura
Executive BIkefisher
The Katadyn BeFree 1.0L is an ultralight water filtration system comprised of a membrane filter and a flexible 1L bladder. The all-in-one setup filters and stores water.
I used the Katadyn BeFree 1.0L water filter on countless outings over the last three years. The filter served me well for trail running, mountain biking, bikefishing, and bikepacking.
Katadyn’s all-encompassing water filter and storage solution earns top marks from me, in theory. Unfortunately, the execution leaves much to be desired in terms of durability.

Functionality
The Katadyn BeFree Water Filtration System 1.0L Review comes with me nearly every time I’m hitting the dirt. I use the setup as my primary dirty water filter and as my secondary water bottle.
I throw the filter in my running pack for longer runs when I know I’ll have access to water resupply points. I fill up the bladder and drink directly from the filter as I need. The Katadyn allows me to leave water bottles at home and reduce the weight on my back.
I pack the Katadyn BeFree filter in my wedge frame bag on my Ritchey Ultra when I’m mountain biking and bikefishing. I fill the bladder before rides if I plan to ride for a long time before hitting a water source. I only run one 26-oz water bottle on my Ultra, so having the ability to put another 1L of water in my frame bag is extremely beneficial.
My Surly Grappler’s frame bag also means that my ability to carry water bottles with that bike is limited. I fill up the bladder and pack it in my Grappler’s frame bag if I need water before I can get to a river or creek for a day of bikefishing.
I typically run the Katadyn BeFree filter filled with water in one stem bag and a 1L Nalgene bottle in another stem bag for my bikepacking setup. The two liters of water and the ability to filter as I go are more than enough for bikepacking routes that have frequent water resupply points.
The ability of the filter and bladder to pack down small when not filled with water is very helpful when bike storage space is at a premium. Normal water bottles have fixed sizes and waste space when they’re empty.
Katadyn claims that cleaning can be accomplished by shaking or swishing the EZ-Clean Membrane filter. I found this to be the case for two of the three filters I used (I’ll get into why I used three of these filters in the next section).
My current Katadyn BeFree 1.0L filter often experiences slow flow rates if I haven’t used it in a few days. Unclogging the filter in the field proved challenging for me many times. Nothing is worse than a slow flow rate after a long day in the hot sun or during cold early mornings.
I have to plan and check the filter’s flow rate before leaving on rides and trips. I normally fix the flow rate in my sink, but it is annoying to have to plan for it.
Durability
As I mentioned above, I’m currently using my third Katadyn BeFree filter and 1L bladder. I experienced two leaking bladders and one broken cap in three years.
The first bladder developed pin-sized holes and leaked water when filled. I’m unsure what caused the holes since I don’t pack the filter setup with any sharp objects in any of my bike bags.
The second bladder delaminated between the firm top section and the soft body section. I don’t see how anything I did could have caused a leak at this part of the bladder. I think this issue is due to the manufacturing process.
The third Katadyn BeFree filter hasn’t leaked water from the bladder. But I have encountered clogging issues with the filter, as I described above. I also broke the connection between the plastic cap and the nozzle. I can still secure the cap on the nozzle when not in use, but I have to be careful not to lose the cap when I’m drinking from the filter.
Final Thoughts
I only stuck with Katadyn BeFree despite durability issues because of REI’s exchange policy. I will move to a different filter system if the current bladder develops a leak, though.
I really like the idea of Katadyn’s BeFree filter system. The BeFree’s packability and double duty as a filter and storage device make it invaluable for me. But I don’t recommend this particular model to others.
Having said that, Katadyn released an updated version of the BeFree with what appears to be a more robust bladder. I hope the update solves the leaking problems I encountered. I would recommend the updated version after extensive use and confirmation that the previous version’s issues were fixed.
I caution anybody getting the new version to be aware of potential durability issues until then. Buying the filter system through a shop with a good return and exchange policy would be a smart move.
